Did you know:
Sesame plants are a nitrogen fixer for your soil. The seeds of the sesame plant are the edible part. Sesame is rich in vitamin E and calcium, and has been suggested to have cholesterol-lowering, anti-diabetic, and anti-aging properties. The oil can be used as a natural sunscreen for the skin. Sesame plants grow well in the south even in summer. Once you remove the seeds, add the rest of the plant to your compost pile, creating more compost! Sesame seeds can be ground up to make Tahini, a very useful (peanut-buttery) spread that can be used instead of other nut butters, for deserts, sauces, and gravies. Many vegans use tahini as a source of calcium. You can also use the seeds buy adding them to every dish, and enjoy the sesame taste that it adds. Because Sesame plants have beautiful flowers, they can be interspersed with other plants in the garden to add a wistful touch. If you buy heirloom sesame seeds, the seeds will naturally reseed.
