We Organic's Vege Loaf With Gravy for Winter

Posted on Dec 16th, 2008 by We Organic : FL Organic Living Group We Organic
We Organic's Vege Loaf with Gravy

Lentils
Barley
Spices
Tahini
Miso

Take equal parts barley and lentils and cook until tender.  (You can put in more lentils if you want, and it will still work...if you like lentils more than barley.)  Add the same spices you might use for meatloaf...ie. onion, garlic, oregano, pepper, salt, chili peppers, marjoram. ..whatever your family recipe is for meatloaf, add those spices. Take the cooked barley and lentil mixture and push it into a loaf pan until solid.

This mixture can be refrigerated until you are ready to use it.
Cut into slices and fry to heat, then place on a plate.

For the gravy, mix 1 part miso, and 3-4 parts more tahini, add water to thin to a gravy. Pour over your vege loaf...Yumm!

About Florida Avocados

Posted on Dec 18th, 2008 by We Organic : FL Organic Living Group We Organic
Avocadot
Here is what www.fresh-from-florida.org says about the Florida version of Avocados, "Florida has its own avocados, nicknamed “alligator pears,” that are special because they are sweeter, lighter, and moister than standard avocados and contain only 1/2 the fat and 2/3 the calories. In 2000, Florida ranked number two in the nation in the vaue of avocados produced.
Avocado

Avocados don’t soften while still on the tree and are still relatively firm when in stores. Plan ahead and buy avocados so they will have several days at room temperature to ripen. If you want to use them immediately, select those that yield to light pressure when pressed gently.

Florida avocados are available from June through March.

Ripe avocados peel easily. Slice in half and remove one side. Use a fork to twist and remove the large pit. Rubbing lemon juice on the

avocado’s surface just before serving stops the otherwise rapid discoloring. Ripened at room temperature and then refrigerated, avocados typically last 14 to 28 days.

A third of an avocado has just 120 calories and is loaded with potassium, dietary fiber, and vitamins A, B, and C."

If you want to buy an avocado tree to grow in your yard, contact the Rare Fruit Council in your area.  They have many members with nursery businesses selling fruit trees, and many do sales for the club as well.  The Rare Fruit Council also has many informative and fun meetings to attend where you can meet other fruit gardeners in Florida.  When growing an organic avocado tree, use manure or nitrogen, ie. horse, chicken or rabbit manure, fish emulsion, decomposed leaf matter, compost or one of the commercial organic fertilizers that are high in nitrogen, (ie. 10-0-0 to 21-0-0).  Fertilize throughout the season monthly until it is time for the tree to go into flowering, then withhold the fertilizer until after fruiting.  Avocados are large trees that offer leaf matter for your compost pile, and shade for your hamock.

There is a wonderful organic farm in South Florida called Glaser Organic Farms.  You can buy some of their products in places like Whole Foods Market.   Look for them in the raw foods section of Whole Foods Market.  You can make an appointment to visit the farm, as well, and buy avocados in season by the box!  See more about them at www.glaserorganicfarms.com.

We are glad to be serving up some recipies for your avocado eating pleasure!  Stay tuned to this blog!  You might find a whole new world in the 'alligator pear'!

Some Salsa!

Posted on Dec 18th, 2008 by We Organic : FL Organic Living Group We Organic
We Organic's Salsa Recipe:

Some Salsa!

We like things hot here in Florida, but you can vary this to your hot loving taste.

Gather:

Avocados
Tomatoes
Tomatillos (optional)
Corn
Onion
Lemon
Hot chilies or medium hot chilies
from the garden, or purchase from an organic produce market.

Remove husks from the corn.  Take the tomatillos and corn and parboil briefly.  Remove skins off the tomatillos, and remove the corn off the stalks with a sharp knife.  Remove pit and skin from the avocado.
Dice the Avocados, tomatoes, onions, hot chilies and tomatillos, and place in a bowl.
Squeeze lemon juice over the diced mixture, and add salt or Braggs Liquid Aminos.

Cover and refrigerate what you don't eat right away.  It will last a few days in refrigeration.

About Porterweed - Florida Native Plant

Posted on Dec 22nd, 2008 by We Organic : FL Organic Living Group We Organic
Porterweed
Porterweed is an excellent choice for the home garden in Florida.  Native to central and south Florida and the tropics, it is found in open woodlands, clearings and disturbed, well-drained areas.  It grows into a shrub, which is very drought tolerant, but which can also withstand moisture.  It is a semi-woody perennial that lives at least four years, and readily reseeds.  Though it reseeds, it is not a pest, as the little seedlings are easily pulled and can be added to the compost pile or sold as a plant to other interested growers.  Porterweed is loved by beneficials such as bees, Zebra Longwing and other butterflies, and dragonflies.  The beautiful flowers of the porterweed bloom year round, and open in the morning, and close in the afternoon.
It can be placed as a border hedge surrounding a garden to attract beneficials.  It grows well next to concrete.  Add trimmings of this plant to your compost pile, or feed small amounts to a pet rabbit, or chickens.  If you plant this plant on the side of a house, it will help shade the house from the summer sun, helping the house to stay cooler.

How to Clean Tile The Green Way

Posted on Dec 23rd, 2008 by We Organic : FL Organic Living Group We Organic
Want to clean your floor tile and make it shine the green way?  In Florida, most of us have tile floors or walls, but we are also aware that under Florida are natural springs where the manatee and other wildlife live.
What can we use to clean with?  Borax!  A trace mineral needed in the soil to grow our plants, is also a great way to clean your floor tile.  Our bodies and gardens need small quantities of Boron, and a commercial product called Borax (boron), which you can purchase at a grocery store in a box is a very inexpensive and healthy way to not harm the environment, or yourself and clean your tile floor.  "Borax, also known as sodium borate, sodium tetraborate, or disodium tetraborate, is an important boron compound, a mineral, and a salt of boric acid. It is usually a white powder consisting of soft colorless crystals that dissolve easily in water."
Borax has a wide variety of uses. It is a component of many detergents, cosmetics, and enamel glazes. It is also used to make buffer solutions in biochemistry, as a fire retardant, as an anti-fungal compound for fiberglass, as an insecticide, as a flux in metallurgy, and as a precursor for other boron compounds.
The term borax is used for a number of closely related minerals or chemical compounds that differ in their crystal water content, but usually refers to the decahydrate. Commercially sold borax is usually partially dehydrated." (wikipedia.org)

Here's how:  Buy a box of Borax, which you can find at most grocery stores or hardware stores.  If one place doesn't have it, another will.  Use gloves, (remember this is a trace mineral in your body) Do a test patch of borax and water solution on your tile in an inconspicuous spot to ensure safety (as usual). Dissolve a few tablespoons of Borax into a pail of water, and clean.  Afterward, use the Borax water to add moisture and minerals to your yard, choosing different areas each time (remember...trace minerals need not be overdone) or pour down a sink or two, which it will help degrease as well.  Borax works great as a way to make tile and glass shine.  If you are cleaning a sink area, you can sprinkle a small amount of Borax and use it as you would a cleanser product.  You can also use borax as a cleaner for other things.

Do you have something glass (like a vase) that needs cleaning?  You can soak that piece of glass in your pail of water and borax as well. Borax is great for people with allergies...there is no real odor.   If you want a sent in the room afterward, use essence oil in a defuser.

Enjoy your healthy and green home!

WANT TO MAKE IT SHINE?  THINK BORAX.
WANT TO DEGREASE?  THINK BORAX.
