If you have a palm tree which has died, dig it out, roots and all.  Turn it upside down and bury it bottom side up.  The roots now become hair.  The rest is carved.  Many pieces of wood can also be found during triming time in the neighborhoods.  There are now hand tools which some carvers say are even better than chainsaws.
